I really just find the whole thing amusing: 1. That Bon Iver is up for a new artist award when he’s been around since we were in high school. 2. That nobody knows who he is. 3. That so many people are pissed off that he won. 4. That he doesn’t give a fuck because he thinks awards (particularly this one) are stupid ways of trying to measure musical quality.

It’s comical.

Also, the fact that people like Nicki Minaj and J Cole are even up for prestigious awards makes me more skeptical of award shows ….and society in general. Remember the time when rap/hip-hop was about representing your hometown and the struggles minorities had to overcome? Remember when music was the catalyst for social change, and songs could spark movements?

Yeah, I don’t either - because for our generation, all music represents is the superficial bullshit that we are trained to value, like wanting to be a billionaire and ass, ass, ass, ass, ass, ass, ass…

Straight up, now, J Cole - I do not really want to love you forever. In fact, I don’t want to love any of your music outside of a club venue.

Don’t even get me started on country music…

All in all, I think Justin was right when he said, “Fuckin’ rock n’ roll should not be decided by people that have that job. Rock n’ roll should be the fucking people with guitars around their backs.”

But I’m not confident in our society’s preferences in music overall.
